HELLO!
Dry Eye Therapy assessment and care at Miller Optometry
Dry Eye is a common condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears to keep them lubricated or when the quality of your tears is poor. Symptoms of dry eye can include a stinging, burning, or scratchy sensation in your eyes, stringy mucus in or around your eyes, sensitivity to light, eye redness, and difficulty wearing contact lenses. Dry eye can also caused blurred vision, variable vision and difficulty with day to day activities like computer use and night driving.
If left untreated, dry eye can cause damage to the surface of your eyes, leading to inflammation, abrasion of the corneal surface, corneal ulcers, and vision loss. Dry eye can also negatively impact your quality of life by decreasing your productivity at work and at home, and negatively affecting your family and social life.
At Miller Optometry, we offer a range of Dry Eye Therapy treatments to help manage your dry eye symptoms. Our treatment plan starts with a comprehensive Dry Eye assessment which includes a series of diagnostic tests to properly evaluate the tear film and ocular surface. This can include a test to measure the volume of your tears, determine the quality of your tears, specialised imaging techniques and looking for markers of dry eye disease. As well as allowing us to create a unique care plan for our patients, it creates a series of baseline measurements so we can monitor progress.
We often get asked what can we do for dry eye and our recommendations may include preservative free artificial tears, eyelid hygiene, prescription eyedrops, in office treatments like Lipiflow and Low Level Light Therapy, ABMAx eyelid cleaning. Looking at lifestyle factors that can affect dry eye is also essential and reviewing these will be important.
We believe that ongoing care is essential to better manage dry eye. Dry eye is a chronic condition and may take time to bring to a level of balance initially. We recommend regular follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. With proper assessment and ongoing care, we can help you manage your dry eye symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Dry Eye Treatments
LipiFlow is a tool used by optometrists to help relieve symptoms of meibomian gland dysfunction, also known as MGD. By applying heat and gentle pressure to the eyelid, the device can melt the solidified lipids blocking the meibomian gland, allowing your eyes to resume lipid production. This well established treatment is often considered the gold standard of care in managing MGD.
ABMax is a small, handheld tool used to treat blepharitis (an eye disease that causes blockages in the oil glands on your eyelids). The device is a soft spinning brush used to clear away solidified oil blocking the oil glands, which allows your eyes to continue to produce the oil they need to create a healthy and robust tear film.
Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) is an exciting emerging therapy in Dry Eye care. LLLT has been around since the 1960s and is often used to treat skin damage. It involves using different wavelengths of light bands to reduce inflammation and manage skin health.
